The United States is bolstering its security cooperation with Armenia, underscoring concerns about the fragile peace following the recent war with Azerbaijan.
In an interview with RFE/RL, US Ambassador to Armenia Kristina Kvien highlighted “very active and robust” discussions on defense between the two nations. This includes dispatching an advisor to assist Armenia’s Ministry of Defense and providing armored ambulances for potential conflict zones.
While the recent USA-EU-Armenia summit explicitly excluded discussions on security matters with Armenia, the ambassador’s interview suggests that the USA will address these issues through bilateral channels.
This development comes alongside Armenia’s existing close defense ties with France, another Western power. The increased US engagement in Armenia’s defense sector is largely seen in the context of stalled peace negotiations with Azerbaijan. The lack of progress raises anxieties about a potential return to military conflict.
Ambassador Kvien acknowledged Armenia’s ongoing discussions with the US regarding its military needs. Armored ambulances are the first confirmed materiel support, but further assistance is being explored.
Azerbaijan’s perceived shortcomings in diplomacy are also seen as an obstacle to achieving lasting peace. Critics point to alleged corruption and a weak diplomatic approach that fails to complement Azerbaijan’s recent military victory.
The deepening US-Armenia defense cooperation signifies a shift in the regional security landscape. Whether it will nudge the peace process forward or lead to a renewed arms race remains to be seen.
